Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche “Mario Negri”

Italy

The Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research is a not-for-profit biomedical research organisation. It was founded in 1961, and started work in Milan on 1 February 1963. Its main headquarter is in Milan, but there are now research centres also in Bergamo, at Ranica – near Bergamo (overall the staff is formed by around 750 workers). The Institute’s main aim is to defend human health and life. To achieve this goal, the Institute’s research programs comprehensively span from the molecular level to the whole human being. The Department of Epidemiology of Mario Negri Institute has a recognised tradition in epidemiological studies. A major area of interest within the department are studies on the associations between tobacco and other life-style factors, alcohol and diet, personal and familial medical history, and the risk of cancer, cardiovascular diseases and other major chronic conditions. In particular, an integrated series of case-control studies on a wide spectrum of cancer sites has been conducted since early 1980s, producing more than 1,500 publications on peer-reviewed journals.
